Patterns of reilience amongst South Africans during COVID-19

During this time of a global pandemic, individuals all over the world are experiencing some sort of acute stress, uncertainty and anxiety (Presti, McHugh, Gloster, Karekla,
& Hayes, 2020; Schimmenti, Billieux, & Vladan, 2020; Shah, Kamrai, Mekala, Mann, & Desai, 2020; Wallace et al., 2020) that brings upon fear of the unknown. This calls for a paradigm shift, by creating a lens that recognizes strengths, assets, hopes, and potential of individuals during this pandemic, resulting in the emergence of resilience research and a shift from a problem-oriented approach towards an approach that

Representations of COVID-19 by the Mapula Embroidery Project

We have commissioned 14 embroidered panels from the Mapula Embroidery Project in the Winterveld, just north of Pretoria. The idea is that the making of the works will provide project members with opportunities to convey their observations about the impact of the disease on their lives and community, while also gleaning a much-needed income during this difficult time. Our plan is to exhibit the works in the gallery that is part of our facility when this is feasible, and to show time this show to coincide with a conference on representations of pandemics.

I have done extensive research on the

The Sanititise-O-Ring is a wearable sanitizer dispensing bangle.
It's affordability and ease-of-use makes it perfect for use by school children, health workers, general workers and the public.
It is mandatory to have sanitizer at the entrance of shops, but what about other potential forms and places of infection such as money, public transport and toilets, door knobs and stairway railing just to name a few.
It is crucial to have sanitizer with us at all times, but sanitizer bottles can be uncomfortable to carry around and can easily be forgotten. If you wear a Sanitise-O-Ring, you will

Robots to contain the spread COVID-19

The spread of COVID-19 can be contained by taking appropriate measures - like wearing of masks, social distancing, use of hand sanitizers, staying indoors if someone has symptoms of COVID-19 etc. From public health perspective there is a need to monitor if an individual is following the protocols laid down to prevent the spread of COVID-19. Continuous monitoring becomes even more difficult at places which has large congregation of people, for e.g. malls, Universities, stadiums etc. The use of robotics along with applications built on top of it can assist with the monitoring and to make sure

Coronavirus Disease 2019 and Endothelialitis

In the era of the global COVID-19 pandemic, questions remain about the pathophysiology, and the severity markers and potential treatment targets. In high HIV prevalence settings, the burden of COVID-19 is yet to be documented, and how these two pandemics will collide and interact remains to be seen. Health care teams would like to understand and pre-empt the cytokine storm that is associated with SARS-CO-V-2 infection, and would like to target those at highest risk of disease severity. We raise some questions in this study in an aid to better understand the interaction between SARS-Co-V-2

Citizen science-based remote parenting support for lifelong health during COVID-19 lockdown and beyond

Violence in families, including violence against children, and women are increasing in an alarming rate during COVID-19 pandemic-induced lockdown. This initiative will implement and evaluate parenting information dissemination, and interactive learning via facilitated parent-support group-based online discussions using text, audio, video, and visual messages. Regional Innovation Networking Platform

Grassroots innovators are innovative individuals that may not necessarily have the requisite educational background or infrastructure to promote the commercialization of their innovations. Their innovative capacity is often driven by necessity and in-depth knowledge of local challenges that could be solved with appropriate technology innovations. The Regional Innovation Networking Platform seeks to identify Grassroot Innovators in the Eastern Cape to support them with tools to help with the commercialization of those innovations. The iHUB is the leading organization and the implementing

Design and testing of novel viral fusion inhibitors against SARS-CoV-2

This project has employed computational (in silico) methods to design a novel class of inhibitors against the SARS-CoV-2 virus (COVID-19). The project has employed state-of-the-art computer-aided drug design (CADD) methods to develop an initial library of putative small molecule inhibitors. Because the compounds are novel, our research group will spend the next 6-18 months synthesizing and characterizing several of the test agents to produce pure, well-characterized compounds for screening. This will be followed by biophysical studies to delineate the binding of the test compounds to the
