Bridging the digital divide with TV White Space (TVWS) technology

Recognising that connectivity is the foundation of digital innovation, the Department of Science and Innovation (DSI) has invested in the use of Television White Space (TVWS) technology to bring affordable, high-speed internet to underserved communities.

Television White Space (TVWS) technology offers:

  • Internet speeds of up to 100 Mbit/s
  • Long-range connectivity ideal for rural and remote areas
  • Support for Internet of Things (IoT) networks and applications

Through collaboration with the Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (ICASA) and the Technology Innovation Agency (TIA), the Department of Science and Innovation (DSI) has contributed to the development of the Spectrum Switch project. This collaborative effort enables the deployment of Television White Space (TVWS) networks. The initiative not only improves connectivity for communities but also creates opportunities for youth and women-owned SMMEs to become network operators.

Professor Mfupe proudly states, “South Africa has become the first African country to have regulations to develop this technology. We are ahead; there's no other country in Africa that can compete with us on this.”
