Young Leaders in Research (YLR) 2026 Cohort
The Young Leaders in Research (YLR) Grant, managed by the African Center for Economic Transformation (ACET), is a twelve-month initiative dedicated to empowering emerging African economists and social scientists to lead transformative, policy-relevant research shaping the continent’s economic future. Designed to build a network of early-career African researchers, the YLR Grant fosters expertise, policy engagement, and thought leadership on Africa’s sustainable growth priorities.
Successful applicants receive:
- Up to USD 15,000 for research activities, data collection, travel, and living expenses
- Personalized mentorship by experienced African economists and policy advisors, with one-on-one support throughout the research process
- Access to peer-learning communities, networking, and skills development
- Opportunities for publication in the ACET Young Leaders in Research series and to present work at ACET-hosted events and influential forums
Eligibility:
- African nationals or permanent residents, aged 35 or younger
- Hold or be enrolled in a master’s degree or higher (preferably in economics or related field)
- Track record of engagement with research (academics, internships, projects, or volunteer work)
- Commitment to leadership and driving positive change in Africa
Research themes (2026):
- Gender equality and inclusive growth
- Regional integration and cross-border cooperation
- Innovation and digital policy for economic acceleration
- Green industrial transformation and sustainability
All research is expected to align with ACET’s Growth with DEPTH framework (Diversification, Export Competitiveness, Productivity, Technology, Human Well-Being) to promote Africa’s long-term transformation through actionable, context-specific solutions.
Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis until November 21, 2025. Early submission is encouraged for timely feedback. Requirements include a concept note, statement of purpose, CV, and two references.
