Summary

Join leading experts and stakeholders for the “Roundtable on Localisation in the South African Water and Sanitation Sector” a pivotal online event addressing the essential role of localisation in one of South Africa’s most critical sectors. The water and sanitation industry not only underpins public health and economic activity but also plays a key part in promoting sustainable development and resilience.

This 90-minute webinar brings together voices from policy, manufacturing, industry, and research to unpack the findings of a new LSF-commissioned study led by Professor Mike Muller. The discussion will explore the entire water and sanitation value chain, examining current market structures, assessing the scale of import dependency, and identifying practical pathways to expand South African manufacturing capacity across the sector.

Participants will have the chance to:

  • Gain an evidence-based understanding of supply chains, technological gaps, and local capabilities;
  • Hear directly from policy-makers, infrastructure managers, and manufacturers about institutional, procurement, and technical barriers to localisation;
  • Engage in a practical exchange of ideas exploring how procurement practices, infrastructure investment, and targeted policy innovation can support local industry growth and competitiveness;
  • Help define next steps for cross-sector collaboration and set shared priorities for building a more resilient and self-sufficient water and sanitation sector.

This roundtable is designed for stakeholders in water policy, infrastructure management, manufacturing, procurement, and industrial development—as well as anyone committed to strengthening local supply chains and advancing South Africa’s goals for sustainable, inclusive development in water and sanitation.
