This Women's Month, we shine a light on Miss Nomahlubi Nompunga, the visionary leader behind Foi Science, a South African company pioneering sustainable beauty through biopolymer technology.

Driven by Change

Nomahlubi's passion for sustainability and community empowerment created the spark for Foi Science. With a commitment to environmental responsibility, Foi Science utilises biopolymers derived from food waste to create eco-friendly skincare products. This not only reduces environmental impact but also empowers rural and disadvantaged communities.

Empowering Through Innovation

Foi Science goes beyond product creation. Training programs in cosmetic science and entrepreneurship equip individuals from underserved communities with valuable skills and economic opportunities.

“Since July 2024, the Sisonke National Movement and Community Led Monitoring have been participating in a transformative pilot program that I am leading. In this programme, they are learning to develop their own organic products, including hairline, anti-aging, feminine hygiene, and trauma healing products for anxiety and insomnia, among others,” she says.

To date, this initiative has trained 10 women and provides empowerment, understanding eco-science, product formulation, and entrepreneurship classes, helping participants create products that reflect their personal stories.

A Holistic Approach to Beauty

Understanding the unique needs of African skin tones is central to Foi Science's mission. They develop tailored skincare solutions while exploring advanced technologies for potential medical applications. Additionally, platforms for skin diagnosis and wound care reflect a holistic approach to well-being.

Breaking Barriers, Building Success

As a female entrepreneur, Nomahlubi faced challenges of gender bias and funding limitations. However, she persevered by building strong networks, presenting compelling business plans and leveraging resources for women-led businesses. Through dedication and continuous learning, she established Foi Science as a force for positive change.

Words of Wisdom for Aspiring Women Entrepreneurs

Nomahlubi's advice for women navigating similar challenges is a roadmap for success, “To succeed in women-owned businesses, build a network, seek strategic funding, invest in growth, manage personal and professional life effectively, embrace your strengths and focus on resilience and excellence to overcome setbacks and build credibility,” she says.

Nomahlubi Nompunga's dedication to sustainability, community empowerment and innovation embodies the spirit of South Africa's Women's Month. Let us celebrate her achievements and support the success of future female leaders in science and business.
