Overview of the Opportunity

This initiative, developed and maintained by the Innovation for Policy Foundation (i4Policy) (a global not-for-profit organisation with African roots), is a learning series designed to transform entrepreneurial ecosystems.

The courses are targeted at forward-thinking change-makers who wish to transform entrepreneurial ecosystems. This includes experienced change-makers who are new to innovation and entrepreneurship, and emerging change-makers interested in breaking into this space. The content is particularly relevant for policy makers, with alumni messages confirming participation from policy makers in Ghana, Kenya, and Senegal.

The series is comprised of 6 independent but progressive courses that are at a basic to intermediary level. The courses guide participants through the fundamentals of building policy in the innovation ecosystem. Participants will receive certification after completing each course.

The six courses cover the following areas:

1. Course 1: Introduction and Fundamentals (introduces fundamental concepts and the why, how, and what of entrepreneurship policy).

2. Course 2: Participatory Ecosystem Assessment (guides users through a 6-step process to assess their country’s entrepreneurial ecosystem and identify main challenges).

3. Course 3: Understanding the Legal Side (explores legislative tools and frameworks, focusing mainly on Small Business Acts and Startup Acts).

4. Course 4: Measuring Success (teaches the practice of monitoring and evaluation in policy success).

5. Course 5: Building your Startup Act (provides insights into tailoring a Startup Act to align with a national context).

6. Course 6: The Entrepreneurship Policy Process (provides practical guidance and a clear framework for developing policies through a participatory process).

The content uses current African case studies.

The courses are completely self-paced, meaning there is no fixed start or end date. Each course is estimated to take about 2 hours to complete, and participants are able to pause and resume anytime.
