Summary

The Embassy Lecture “Intraseasonal Climate Variability and Its Impact on Society: South Africa and the Czech Republic in Partnership” is an interactive online session fostering international scientific collaboration to address urgent climate and sustainability challenges. This virtual event brings together leading scientific institutions including the Academy of Science of South Africa (ASSAf), the Czech Academy of Sciences, the Department of Science, Technology and Innovation (South Africa), and the Embassy of the Czech Republic in South Africa, to advance bilateral cooperation and science diplomacy.

Focused on climate variability and extreme events such as heat waves, droughts, floods, and their direct impacts on society, ecosystems, and human health, the session spotlights themes at the forefront of global science policy. Attendees will benefit from high-level insights into intraseasonal climate patterns, short-term atmospheric phenomena, and strategies to build resilience and inform sustainable development aligning with South Africa’s 2024 -2025 G20 Presidency theme of “Solidarity, Equality, and Sustainability.”

This dynamic webinar features opening remarks by prominent international science leaders, lead presentations by Dr Katlego Ncongwane (South African Weather Service) and Dr Aleš Urban (Czech University of Life Sciences Prague), and a roundtable panel discussion moderated by Dr Thandeka Kapwata (South African Medical Research Council). Joining the panel are distinguished experts including Dr Ondřej Lhotka (Czech Academy of Sciences), Professor Willem Landman (University of Pretoria), Dr Ncongwane, and Dr Urban providing a blend of local and global perspectives.

Concluding with a live Q&A and closing remarks by Professor Stephanie Burton (University of Pretoria; ASSAf), the session offers participants not only the latest climate science, but also the chance to engage with thought leaders shaping international research and resilience strategies. This is a unique opportunity for researchers, policymakers, and innovators to network, share knowledge, and drive impactful climate action across borders.
