The Climate Change and Health Innovation Hub for West and Central Africa (CHINNOVA) is inviting proposals for its first Small Grants Call, dedicated to advancing locally led, interdisciplinary research and innovation aimed at tackling urgent climate-related health challenges across West and Central Africa.

CHINNOVA, a regional initiative under the Advancing Research for Climate and Health (ARCH) programme, will support 8 - 10 research or innovation projects over an 18-month period (2026-2027). Each selected project can receive up to $70,000 in grant funding to implement collaborative research focusing on strengthening climate-resilient health systems, advancing equity, and producing evidence for better policy and practical interventions.

Geographic Scope:
Applicants must be based in, or propose collaborations involving, institutions from one or more of the following countries:

  • Cameroon
  • Chad
  • Côte d’Ivoire
  • Democratic Republic of Congo
  • Gabon
  • The Gambia
  • Ghana
  • Guinea
  • Guinea-Bissau
  • Liberia
  • Mauritania
  • Senegal
  • Sierra Leone
  • Togo

Applicants outside these countries (e.g., South Africa) are NOT eligible unless collaborating with lead institutions based in the eligible countries.

Eligibility Criteria:
This call is open to a broad range of research and implementation-focused organizations, specifically:

  • Universities and accredited research institutions actively conducting climate-health research
  • Non-governmental organizations (NGOs) with a research mandate
  • Public or private institutions engaged in health or climate-related research

In addition, CHINNOVA encourages multi-stakeholder partnerships, inviting applications from research teams that bring together:

  • Academic institutions
  • NGOs
  • Civil society organizations
  • Private sector partners

Multi-country applications are welcome as long as the project’s scope, collaborations, and budget allocation are clearly defined. All proposals must integrate gender and equity considerations, show strong contextual relevance to the realities of West and Central Africa, and outline clear pathways to impact (such as stakeholder engagement, policy influence, and sustainability).

Proposals will be submitted through the CHINNOVA Online Grants Management System (OGMS). All projects are expected to foster regional collaboration and capacity building, with a strong focus on evidence-based innovation and sustainable health outcomes for climate-vulnerable communities.
