2026 Call for Proposals: GEF Small Grants Programme (SGP) – Ghana
Up to US$30,000 for Community-Led Environmental Solutions
The Global Environment Facility Small Grants Programme (GEF-SGP), implemented by UNDP, has launched its 2026 Call for Proposals under GEF-8 to support innovative, community-driven environmental initiatives in Ghana
This funding window focuses specifically on communities along the Black Volta Basin, targeting environmental resilience, inclusive development, and locally led sustainability solutions.
Country Eligibility
Ghana only
Priority geographic areas include communities within:
- Wa-West District (Upper West Region)
- Banda District (Bono Region)
- Bole, Sawla-Tuna-Kalba Districts
- Central Gonja Municipal (Savannah Region)
Applicants must already be based or have an operational presence within the Black Volta Basin landscape.
Grant Size & Duration
- Maximum funding: US$30,000 per project
- Funding includes monitoring and administrative costs
- Projects expected to be completed by December 2027
- Disbursement in three tranches (40% / 50% / 10%) upon milestone verification
Strategic Focus Areas
Projects must align with one or more of the following GEF-8 priority areas
- Community-based conservation of threatened ecosystems and species
- Sustainable agriculture, fisheries, and food security
- Low-carbon energy access co-benefits
- Chemicals and waste management coalitions
- Sustainable urban solutions through CSO–Government–Private Sector dialogue platforms
All proposals must demonstrate innovation, impact, scalability, and alignment with Ghana’s SGP Country Programme Strategy.
Eligible Organisations
Applicants must be:
Local Non-Governmental or Non-Profit Organisations
- Legally registered in Ghana
- With valid Registrar General’s Department and Social Welfare certificates
Community-Based Organisations / Community Groups
- Recognised by relevant District Assemblies and the Environmental Protection Authority of Ghana
Social Enterprise Organisations
- Legally recognised and operating in Ghana
Additional Requirements:
- Minimum 2 years of relevant experience in environmental, forestry, or agriculture-related activities
- Demonstrated experience working with communities
- Proven technical and financial management capacity
Government ministries are not eligible.
Evaluation Criteria
Proposals are evaluated out of 100 points across
- Technical approach & methodology (50 points)
- Institutional capacity (25 points)
- Finance & budgeting (25 points)
Minimum qualifying score: 70%
Shortlisted proposals will be reviewed by the National Steering Committee for final endorsement.
