The main objective of the Technology Innovation Agency's (TIA) Technology Development fund is to support the development of technologies from proof of concept, leading to product prototype, and ultimately demonstration thereof in an operating environment.

TIA's Technology Development Fund is targeted at innovators in institutions of higher learning, science councils/public research institutions and Small, Medium and Micro-sized Enterprises (SMMEs). The fund funds component and/or breadboard validation in laboratory, component and/or breadboard validation in relevant environment, system/subsystem model or prototype demonstration in a relevant environment and system prototype demonstration in and operational environment (Technology Readiness Level (TRL) 4 -7). Applicants, excluding science councils and institutions of higher learning, are required to be South African Citizens with valid South African identity documents. Entities (SMMEs) must be registered with the Companies and Intellectual Property Commission (CIPC) and adhere to acceptable corporate governance practices appropriate with the client's legal status. Entities are required to have contractual capacity to engage with TIA and all primary technology development activities must operate within South Africa. Applicants with foreign owned intellectual property (IP) should license or assign the IP to a local institution (Institution of higher learning, science council or legal entity registered with CIPC). TIA will assess the attractiveness and sustainability of the project opportunities in terms of (among others) the innovativeness of the technology/product/process/services, current stage of technology development, viability of the technology, business model, structure and process required to commercialise.

TIA will assess the attractiveness and sustainability of the project opportunities in terms of (among others) the innovativeness of the technology/product/process/services, current stage of technology development, viability of the technology, business model, structure and process required to commercialise.

TIA has a three-stage application process; the submission of a Statement of Interest and basic
assessment, full assessment and approval.
