Let the River Power Us Up In a bid to provide reliable access to green electricity to uplift indigent communities and to develop the region’s economy we are developing a fully functioning prototype of a paddle wheel for generating electricity from rivers in Africa. Hydro technology typically requires building permanent infrastructure (e.g. weirs, dams, etc.), which is not only expensive but has a negative impact on the river ecology, our approach is different and green. The next step of this project is to develop of a fully functioning prototype paddle wheel for generating electricity from rivers in Africa. The need that this innovation aims to address is reliable access to green electricity to uplift communities and to develop the region’s economy. The proof-of-concept has already been established by the IAT Walter Sisulu University (WSU) on behalf of their client. The purpose of the prototype is to test the performance of a commercial-ready product with the aim of marketing the technology to attract investment. The purpose of the project is to generate green electricity which can provide power to remote areas in relatively close proximity to perennial rivers in Africa. Although it is aimed at the more rural setting, it also has the potential to augment power supply for urban needs and industry. The technology is innovative with an extremely low impact on the environment.
