Tourism Uncovered is a South African tourism technology company that uses gamification and storytelling to help tourism authorities promote destinations and convert digital engagement into real travel. The company offers 26-week, story-driven treasure hunt campaigns featuring destination landmarks, culture and heritage, with interactive challenges, trip-planning and booking features.
1. How the solution works
Tourism Uncovered is a gamified engagement concept built around story licensing. A tourism authority licenses a 26 week treasure hunt built around their destination's landmarks, culture, and heritage. Players access weekly episodes through the platform on mobile, desktop, and laptop, each combining a short story segment with a discovery, puzzle, or location based challenge. Free tier players can watch, play, and learn at no cost. Premium players unlock trip planning and booking features that convert engagement into real travel bookings for local operators. Tourism authorities receive a fully built, ready to launch campaign along with engagement, booking, and revenue reporting throughout the season.
2. What makes it innovative
Most destination marketing is one off content that travelers see once and forget. Tourism Uncovered is built like a serialized story, with weekly cliffhangers that give players a reason to keep returning across six months rather than one campaign moment. It combines three things not currently offered together in one platform: professional storytelling, proven gamification mechanics such as live leaderboards and weekly races, and a licensing model that lets a tourism authority reach a global, cross device audience without building any of this in house.
3. Target customers
Our primary customers are national tourism authorities with dedicated destination marketing budgets and public visitor targets, such as those tied to national tourism visions. We also see a path to state and city tourism boards and destination marketing organisations once a flagship national campaign proves the model.
4. Evidence of traction
We are pre launch. What is currently in motion: flagship market outreach and pitch conversations initiated with several national tourism authorities, interest expressed from a regional investor pending co investment, and applications submitted to several accelerator and investor programmes. Our near term plan is to build a live demonstration season that serves as proof of the model ahead of the first signed licensing deal.
5. Business model and growth plan
Revenue comes from a destination licensing fee paid by the tourism authority, along with premium membership subscriptions, sponsorship from hotels and operators, in platform advertising, booking commissions, and branded merchandise. The licensing fee is the primary and most predictable revenue line, with membership and the other streams providing additional upside as player numbers grow. Growth plan: land one flagship tourism market, run and prove the model with a live season, then use that as a reference case to license further national, state, and city markets. Longer term, the same story driven format extends beyond destinations to corporate brand storytelling, where a company's own history and identity become the season's narrative, for example "Coca Cola Uncovered," opening a second licensing category alongside tourism.
6. Support or partnerships required
We are seeking a $500,000 seed raise to fund the platform build, close a technical co founder hire, and convert our current flagship market conversations into a signed licensing deal. We are also open to introductions to national tourism authorities and technology partners who could support the platform build.
