Smart Amalgamation is an Urban and Regional Planning professional, researcher, and development practitioner with growing experience in spatial planning, transport research, and national policy support in South Africa. I hold a bachelor’s degree in urban and Regional Planning from the University of Venda, where I developed a strong grounding in spatial development frameworks, land-use planning, policy analysis, and sustainable development.

My academic and research interests focus on urban decay, rural town development, spatial inequality, and infrastructure planning, particularly within historically marginalized and rural contexts. I have contributed to scholarly work in this area, including conference research and academic publications examining building dilapidation and urban decline in South African rural towns. In addition to my academic work, I have gained practical research and policy development experience through my involvement with Gwarajena Transport Research and Development, where I worked on nationally significant transport and aviation-related projects under the guidance of senior experts, including Mac Mashiri. My contributions formed part of broader multidisciplinary teams supporting government-led initiatives such as the National Civil Aviation Transformation Strategy and the Development of a National Framework for Open Space Management (NFOSM) in South Africa.

Technical report writing and editing
Structuring of strategic chapters and analytical sections, integration of figures, tables, and policy frameworks, responding to expert review comments and refining draft deliverables, supporting the development of government-facing presentations and reports. This exposure strengthened my understanding of transport planning, aviation systems, policy alignment, and strategic development processes within a national governance context. Motivated by a desire to translate research and planning into tangible development outcomes, I went on to establish Com Amalgamated Development Impartations (CADI), a private development and planning entity, and Masakona Amalgamated Development Impartations, a community-focused non-profit organization. Through these institutions, I seek to bridge the gap between policy, research, and implementation, delivering integrated development solutions that respond to both institutional priorities and community needs.
