Siyanda Polymers will manufacture its plastic bags using ecovio, which is a certified compostable bio-based polymer compound (a blend of PBAT and PLA engineered by BASF.)

The products are 100% compostable (both industrially and home-compostable depending on the application), completely breaking down into natural elements (biomass, water, and carbon dioxide) without leaving toxic residues or harmful microplastics. The initial product line will focus on high-performance retail carrier bags (t-shirt bags) and durable, certified organic waste bin liners tailored for household and commercial waste separation. Sizes will range from small 12L plastic bags to 24L bags, the standard retail footprint dimensions to heavier-duty multi-litre waste capacity bags. Unlike traditional petroleum-based plastics (made from LDPE/HDPE) which persist in the environment for hundreds of years and fall under strict post-consumer recyclate (PCR) regulatory mandates, our products are engineered for organic recovery loops, substituting fossil resources with plant-derived material matrices while maintaining equivalent tensile strength and flexibility.

 

Siyanda Polymers will leverage advanced pre-blended biopolymer technology rather than standard fossil-fuel extraction. Siyanda will also make use of a granulator, which will encourage a closed-loop system. The manufacturing process will focus on localized conversion of certified compostable resins tailored for closed-loop systems—specifically addressing food waste diversion. By using formulations like ecovio, the innovation lies in delivering packaging that performs identically to traditional plastic on supermarket shelves while seamlessly converting into soil-enriching compost post-consumer use, perfectly aligning with global circular economy standards.

 

Siyanda Polymers is currently in its pre-operational / market validation and scaling preparation phase. We have completed foundational formulation research, aligned our supply chain channels such as raw material security, formal registration compliance (including CIPC, Extended Producer Responsibility [EPR] registration with the DFFE), and are actively pursuing our light manufacturing facility footprint within the East London Industrial Development Zone (ELIDZ). We are currently building market validation samples and finalizing capital acquisition to procure primary conversion equipment.

 

Our target market are major retail groups, supermarket chains, and regional wholesalers looking for sustainable packaging solutions to meet their own ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) targets. Municipalities and waste management service providers requiring certified organic waste bin liners for source-separation household waste programs. Eco-conscious restaurants, food-service distributors, and commercial entities requiring compliant retail packaging that avoids conventional plastic levy penalties and consumer pushback.

 

The business directly combats plastic pollution in the Eastern Cape by diverting single-use plastic waste from overflowing landfills and oceans. Furthermore, by introducing certified compostable organic waste bin liners, we actively facilitate the collection and composting of organic food waste, turning waste streams into nutrient-rich compost. As a 31-year-old black female-led enterprise, Siyanda Polymers is deeply committed to local socioeconomic transformation. The project aims to create sustainable green-collar manufacturing, logistics, and administrative jobs in the Eastern Cape, specifically prioritizing the recruitment, skills transfer, and employment of local youth and young women from previously disadvantaged backgrounds.

The required funding by Siyanda Polymers is R5 million and will be strategically deployed toward:

  • Capital Expenditure (CAPEX): Acquisition of core bioplastic film extrusion and bag-converting machinery.
  • Facility Setup: Securing and retrofitting the operational warehouse footprint within the ELIDZ (including power supply and safety compliance).
  • Raw Material Working Capital: Procuring initial bulk batches of certified compostable resin for commercial trial runs and large-scale retail off-take samples.
  • Certification & Compliance: Finalizing local product testing and compliance verifications (such as SANS alignment).
