The PtX Grant Competition, launched by GIZ South Africa, Lesotho & eSwatini, provides grant funding for tangible, operating demonstrations of green hydrogen and Power-to-X (PtX) applications in South Africa.
The competition is focused on projects that can contribute to job creation, skills development, reduced carbon intensity and the development of South Africa’s green hydrogen value chain.
The programme is looking for physical, operational pilot projects rather than studies, concept notes or purely theoretical proposals. Projects should be sufficiently advanced for the grant to address a defined gap on the path to commissioning.
Funding Available
A total of EUR 500,000 is available through the competition.
The funding may be awarded as:
- One flagship grant; or
- Several grants across selected projects.
The grant is non-reimbursable, subject to due diligence and applicable grant conditions.
Co-Financing Requirement
Applicants must provide a minimum of 25% co-financing, which may be provided through:
- Cash contributions; or
- Verifiable in-kind contributions.
What Types of Projects Are Eligible?
The competition supports operating demonstrations across the green hydrogen and PtX value chain, including:
- Green hydrogen mobility
- Industrial applications of green hydrogen
- Green ammonia
- Power-to-X derivatives
- Green hydrogen technology applications
The emphasis is on tangible pilots that can move towards commissioning, rather than research studies or conceptual projects.
Project Readiness
Projects should be sufficiently developed to demonstrate a defined implementation gap that the grant can help address.
Selected projects are expected to achieve commissioning within 24 months.

The competition is open to organisations legally registered in South Africa, including:
- SMEs
- Start-ups
- Larger corporates
- Non-profit organisations
- Research organisations
The opportunity is therefore open to organisations of different sizes, provided they meet the competition requirements.

Applications are submitted through the Project Development Standard (PDS) platform
The PDS is used as the application platform for the competition. It provides a structured framework for collecting and assessing project information relating to GH2 and PtX projects.
Programme
The PtX Grant Competition forms part of the “Promoting value chains for critical raw minerals and green hydrogen and derivatives in South Africa (H2.SA II/BVC)” programme.
The programme is jointly funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and the European Commission and implemented by GIZ.
