The National Research Foundation (NRF) of South Africa, in partnership with the Research Foundation – Flanders (FWO), invites applications for collaborative research projects under the 2027–2029 Joint Call.

This programme aims to strengthen bilateral research collaboration between South Africa and Flanders (Belgium) by supporting high-quality, innovative research across all scientific disciplines. Projects should demonstrate scientific excellence, societal relevance, and strong international collaboration

What is Funded

Funding supports:

  • Research activities and project implementation
  • Scientific staff and consumables
  • Equipment (FWO side)
  • Travel and mobility for collaboration
  • Postdoctoral research support
  • Mini research sabbaticals for doctoral students
  • Science engagement and knowledge-sharing activities

Funding Details

  • NRF (South Africa): Up to R1.5 million per project (over 3 years)
  • FWO (Flanders): Funding for staff, consumables, and equipment
  • Duration: 3 years (2027–2029)
  • Projects Funded: Up to 6 collaborative projects 

     

Eligibility Criteria

  • Joint applications with:
    • One Principal Investigator (PI) in South Africa
    • One Principal Investigator (PI) in Flanders
  • South African applicants must:
    • Be affiliated with a recognised research institution
    • Hold a PhD
  • Proposals must be submitted to both NRF and FWO
  • Collaboration must demonstrate clear scientific value and balanced contribution

Application Process

  • Submit proposals via:
    • NRF Connect (South Africa)
    • FWO E-portal (Flanders)
  • Ensure both submissions are aligned and identical
  • Include required documentation (CVs, budgets, support letters)

  • Call Opens: 3 March 2026
  • Application Deadline: 26 May 2026
  • NRF Institutional Deadline: 1 June 2026
  • Project Start: January 2027
