NRF–FWO Joint Call for Collaborative Research Projects (2027–2029)
The National Research Foundation (NRF) of South Africa, in partnership with the Research Foundation – Flanders (FWO), invites applications for collaborative research projects under the 2027–2029 Joint Call.
This programme aims to strengthen bilateral research collaboration between South Africa and Flanders (Belgium) by supporting high-quality, innovative research across all scientific disciplines. Projects should demonstrate scientific excellence, societal relevance, and strong international collaboration.

What is Funded
Funding supports:
- Research activities and project implementation
- Scientific staff and consumables
- Equipment (FWO side)

- Mini research sabbaticals for doctoral students

Funding Details
- NRF (South Africa): Up to R1.5 million per project (over 3 years)
- FWO (Flanders): Funding for staff, consumables, and equipment
- Duration: 3 years (2027–2029)
Projects Funded: Up to 6 collaborative projects
Eligibility Criteria
- Joint applications with:
- One Principal Investigator (PI) in South Africa
- One Principal Investigator (PI) in Flanders
- South African applicants must:
- Be affiliated with a recognised research institution
- Hold a PhD
- Proposals must be submitted to both NRF and FWO
- Collaboration must demonstrate clear scientific value and balanced contribution

- Ensure both submissions are aligned and identical
- Include required documentation (CVs, budgets, support letters)
