NewCarbon Company Overview

NewCarbon is a South African climate-tech and circular-biomass company developing modular bio-refinery systems that convert underutilised forestry, agricultural, and invasive biomass into high-value carbon products, agricultural inputs, renewable heat, and clean energy.

The company was founded to solve a structural African problem: large volumes of biomass waste and invasive vegetation are either burned, left to decay, or treated as low-value residue, while African industries continue to import activated carbon, soil amendments, crop-support products, and energy inputs. NewCarbon transforms this waste stream into a portfolio of commercial products with strong industrial, agricultural, environmental, and rural-development value.

NewCarbon’s technology platform is based on controlled thermal conversion of biomass into multiple revenue streams, including activated biocarbon, biochar, wood vinegar, bio-oil, process heat, and renewable electricity. These outputs serve growing markets in animal feed, water treatment, agriculture, mining, soil restoration, carbon removal, and decentralised energy.

The company has progressed beyond concept stage. NewCarbon has developed and operated pilot-scale pyrolysis systems, validated core product pathways, built technical know-how in biomass conversion, and established early commercial traction through sales of activated biocarbon and biochar products. The company has also developed market opportunities for wood vinegar as a natural agricultural input for crop-support applications in high-value farming systems such as strawberries, blueberries, citrus, macadamias, and vegetables.

NewCarbon’s business model is built around scalable modular deployment. Its long-term platform strategy combines centralised bio-refinery hubs with smaller decentralised processing units located close to biomass sources. This hub-and-spoke model reduces feedstock transport costs, creates rural processing capacity, supports job creation, and enables value to be captured closer to forestry and farming communities. The model is particularly relevant for African regions with forestry residues, invasive alien biomass, macadamia shells, agricultural residues, and rural energy constraints.

The first major commercialisation pathway is focused on carbon products and agricultural inputs. NewCarbon currently targets activated biocarbon for animal feed and industrial applications, granular biochar for agriculture and soil conditioning, and wood vinegar for crop-support markets. These products create near-term revenue while supporting the larger strategic objective of deploying modular bio-refinery infrastructure across South Africa and other African markets.

NewCarbon’s impact potential is significant. The platform can contribute to import substitution, rural industrialisation, climate-resilient agriculture, biomass waste reduction, invasive vegetation management, renewable energy generation, and carbon sequestration. By converting low-value biomass into high-value products, NewCarbon creates a circular economy bridge between forestry, agriculture, industry, and climate finance.

The company is now seeking accelerator support to refine its scale-up model, strengthen its investor readiness, access strategic networks, and develop partnerships for commercial deployment across Africa. Accelerate Africa is strongly aligned with NewCarbon’s next stage because the company is building a scalable African solution to climate resilience, agricultural productivity, industrial import substitution, rural job creation, and clean-energy access.

NewCarbon’s ambition is to become a leading African biomass-to-carbon platform, deploying modular bio-refineries that turn local biomass challenges into commercial products, climate benefits, and distributed industrial development.
