The Leakproof Sample Rack for Ultra-Low Temperature Biological Storage is a secondary containment rack for the safe storage and transport of high-risk biological samples in –80 °C freezers. It is intended to prevent the release of infectious material in the event of sample tube leakage, breakage, or accidental drops, providing a fully sealed additional layer of protection for Biosafety Level 3 (BSL-3) samples.

The system consists of two tightly interlocking components: a flexible silicone base that securely holds individual sample tubes, and a rigid polycarbonate lid that seals onto the base to form a leakproof enclosure. Together, these components create a closed containment unit capable of capturing any leaked liquid within the rack, even under impact or tipping conditions.

The materials were selected to maintain structural integrity and sealing performance across a wide temperature range, from ultra-low freezer conditions to room temperature. Importantly, the silicone base and polycarbonate lid exhibit similar thermal contraction behaviour, ensuring the seal remains tight at –80 °C, where conventional racks often fail.

The rack base is fully sealed, with no perforations, allowing complete containment of liquid released from damaged tubes. A smooth underside enables compatibility with automated freezer systems and robotic handling, while the secure lid design prevents accidental opening during routine handling.

Performance was validated through laboratory testing simulating real-world use, including prolonged storage at –80 °C, repeated opening and closing while frozen, routine tube handling, and drop tests of up to two metres. The rack retained its structural integrity, leakproof seal, and usability throughout, confirming its suitability for high-containment laboratory environments.
