Overview of Business

Karvaura is a South African innovation-led creative enterprise developing ways for people, organisations and communities to engage with art, creativity and mental wellness. Its flagship product, the patent-pending Karving Kanvas, is a tactile, multi-layered colour-reveal art medium that allows users to create by “karving” into the surface and revealing different colours at different depths.

Unlike traditional carving materials, which produce a single-colour result and require ink, paint or printing processes to complete an artwork, the Karving Kanvas contains colour within the material itself. This creates an intuitive “karve-by-colour” experience: users remove selected areas of the surface to progressively reveal the colours beneath. The result is a clean, highly visual and sensory creative process that can be approached by beginners while still offering artistic potential for experienced creators.

Karvaura operates across three market pillars. The first is art supplies, where the Karving Kanvas is positioned as a new creative medium for artists, hobbyists, schools and crafters. The second is experiential marketing, where the product can be customised for branded activations, corporate gifting, events and interactive installations. The third is mental wellness, where Karvaura is exploring the role of tactile, repetitive creative activity in supporting focus, mindfulness, stress management and meaningful screen-free engagement.

The business follows both business-to-consumer and business-to-business routes to market. Consumer products are sold through direct channels, events and e-commerce, while the B2B model includes customised products, workshops, corporate wellness experiences, education, retail partnerships and branded creative activations. This diversified model allows a single core innovation to serve multiple customer segments without changing the fundamental manufacturing platform.

Karvaura is founder-led and has progressed from concept and prototyping into commercial market validation. The product has been demonstrated and sold to customers at South African creative and design events, while engagement with corporate, education, wellness and retail stakeholders is expanding. Intellectual property protection forms part of the company’s international growth strategy, with patent protection being pursued for the underlying product innovation.

The company is also developing a more circular approach as it scales. Karving waste can be separated and collected, creating opportunities for future recycling and upcycling applications alongside product development, safety testing and manufacturing quality control.

Founded by a scientist, strategist and creator, Karvaura combines materials thinking with commercial strategy and artistic experimentation. This multidisciplinary foundation supports an innovation process: test, observe real-world use, learn from customers and refine the product around demonstrated demand.

The longer-term vision is to establish Karvaura as a South African-born global category creator in polychromatic tactile art. Growth opportunities include additional formats, new colour combinations, artist-designed collections, creative kits, larger interactive installations and applications tailored to education, rehabilitation, wellness and corporate environments.

Karvaura is seeking strategic partnerships, market-access opportunities, distribution relationships, funding and innovation ecosystem support to accelerate manufacturing scale, commercialisation and international market entry. The ambition is not simply to launch another art product, but to build a new creative platform around a simple idea: colour does not have to sit on the surface of an artwork – it can be discovered within it.
