An affordable high-performance polycentric prosthetic knee was designed to address the global gap in access to functional prosthetic technology. The knee integrates advanced polycentric biomechanics with cost-optimised engineering to deliver high levels of stability, gait efficiency, and durability at an accessible price point. It is specifically engineered to overcome the technical, economic, and environmental constraints that limit access to reliable prosthetic knee solutions in low- and middle-income country settings.

 

The prosthetic knee integrates a pneumatic extension-assist mechanism using proven mountain-bike shock technology to deliver smooth knee return, improved stance-phase stability, and controlled swing during gait. Impact absorption during stance reduces loading on the residual limb, improving comfort and safety across uneven and variable terrain commonly encountered in LMIC settings. The knee is designed as a modular system with replaceable individual components, rather than a sealed unit requiring full replacement upon failure. This design:

  • Enables local repair and maintenance in low-resource environments
  • Reduces the lifetime cost of ownership for clinics and users
  • Minimises device downtime and abandonment

Together, these features make the technology highly suitable for LMIC rehabilitation ecosystems, where access to spare parts, funding, and specialised technical expertise is often constrained.
