Opportunity Overview
The 2nd ECOWAS Startup Awards is a regional initiative of the ECOWAS Commission designed to identify, recognise and support high-impact startups contributing to digital transformation, regional economic integration and sustainable value-chain development across West Africa.
The 2026 edition will bring together an expected 60 startups from the 12 ECOWAS Member States, connecting founders with investors, policymakers, development partners and other ecosystem stakeholders. Beyond recognition, the programme provides selected startups with opportunities for regional visibility, investor engagement, mentorship, acceleration, networking and access to digital tools.
The programme is convened under the strategic guidance and oversight of the Directorate of Private Sector and Industry of the ECOWAS Commission, hosted in Abuja, and jointly implemented by the Pan African Alliance of Small and Medium Industries (PAOSMI) and Investment Promotion Agencies of West African States (IPAWAS).

The 2026 Awards are centred on six strategic sectors:
- EdTech & Skills Development
- FinTech
- HealthTech
- AgriTech & Food Systems
- CleanTech, Climate & Green Innovation
- Tourism, Hospitality & TravelTech
Startups should therefore demonstrate how their product, service or business model contributes to innovation and growth within one or more of these priority areas.
Who Can Apply?
The opportunity is specifically targeted at startups founded by citizens of ECOWAS Member States.
Applicants must meet all six eligibility requirements:
- Be a citizen of an ECOWAS Member State.
- Operate a startup that is registered and based within an ECOWAS country.
- Have been in operation for a minimum of two years.
- Have a working product or service.
- Demonstrate evidence of market traction or scalability.
- Submit all required application documentation.
Eligible Countries
Applications are open across the 12 current ECOWAS Member States:
Benin, Cabo Verde, Côte d’Ivoire, The Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Liberia, Nigeria, Senegal, Sierra Leone and Togo.
What Selected Startups Receive
The Awards go beyond a conventional startup competition. Selected participants gain access to a regional platform designed to help them strengthen their businesses and expand their networks.
Benefits include:
- Cash prizes: US$30,000 for the winner, US$20,000 for the first runner-up and US$15,000 for the second runner-up.
- Regional visibility: Exposure across all 12 ECOWAS Member States.
- Investor access: Opportunities to engage investors through dedicated investor deal rooms.
- Networking: Connections with founders, policymakers, investors and development partners.
- Mentorship and acceleration: A six-month acceleration programme focused on capacity building.
- Digital tools: Computers, accessories and software to support participating startups.
- Post-award acceleration: Continued support following the competition.
Programme Activities
Participants will engage in a programme that includes:
- Virtual masterclasses
- Startup clinics
- Pitch competitions
- Exhibitions
- Investor deal rooms
- Policy dialogues
- Post-award acceleration
The virtual masterclasses and startup clinics will take place from 21–25 September 2026, followed by the physical programme in Abuja from 28–30 September 2026. The Regional Finals will take place on 30 September 2026, where finalists will pitch before an independent regional jury.
How Selection Works
The competition uses a two-phase selection process.
Phase 1 – National Selection: Each ECOWAS Member State nominates half of its allocated slots, while the other half is selected from applications submitted through the general public application process. This means that a startup does not need to rely on a national nomination to secure a place.
Phase 2 – Regional Finals: Finalists pitch before an independent regional jury in Abuja. Winners are determined through scoring and consensus, with judges drawn from industry, investment and policy backgrounds.

- Problem clarity and solution fit
- Innovation and originality
- Market potential and scalability
- Business model and financial viability
- Social and economic impact
- Team capacity and execution ability
- Alignment with ECOWAS priorities
- Pitch quality, online voting and data integrity
What Applicants Need to Prepare
Applicants should prepare the following documentation before starting the application:
- Completed online application form
- National passport or ECOWAS-approved identity document for the lead founder
- Recent passport photograph
- Business registration certificate, where applicable
- Two years of financial statements, management accounts or projections
- Business plan of no more than 10 pages
- Pitch deck of no more than 10 slides
- One-minute pitch video in MP4, MOV or WebM format
The application portal allows applicants to save their progress and return to complete the submission.

Why This Opportunity Matters
For eligible West African startups, the ECOWAS Startup Awards offer more than prize funding. The programme creates a pathway into a regional innovation and investment ecosystem, giving participating startups the opportunity to strengthen their visibility beyond their domestic market, engage investors and policymakers, build relationships across ECOWAS and access structured acceleration support.
Startups with at least two years of operations, an established product or service, demonstrated market traction and ambitions to scale regionally may find this particularly relevant.
