2026 South African Women in Science Awards (SAWiSA)
The Department of Science, Technology and Innovation (DSTI) has opened applications for the 2026 South African Women in Science Awards (SAWiSA).
These awards aim to recognise and celebrate outstanding women scientists and researchers, while also profiling them as role models for young women entering science, technology and innovation fields.
The 2026 theme is:
"Placing Women at the Centre of Science, Technology and Innovation (STI)"
Award Categories
Awards will be presented to:
Distinguished Women Researchers
Distinguished Young Women Researchers
Across the following fields:
- Humanities and Social Sciences
- Natural Sciences (Life and Physical Sciences)
- Engineering Sciences
- Public Engagement with Science
- Special Category: Innovation for Impact: Women Leading Change
Additional Opportunities
DSTI Fellowship Awards will also be available for:
- Master’s students
- PhD students
Eligibility Criteria
Applicants must:
- Be women scientists or researchers
- Be South African citizens or permanent residents
- Demonstrate excellence in science, research, or innovation
