Council for Scientific and Industrial Research
Overview of innovation

The Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) has rigorously investigated and conducted preclinical studies on the use of the South African indigenous plant species, Siphonochilus aethiopicus, commonly known as African ginger, in the treatment of allergic and respiratory diseases, including asthma. The CSIR has developed, optimised and patented the most effective extraction method for this plant material, enabling successful pilotscale extractions. Additionally, the propagation programme, established in partnership with a CSIR collaborator, ensures a reliable and sustainable supply of plant material for commercialisation.
